🧬 What You Need to Know About MTHFR

You may have heard the term “MTHFR” floating around in wellness conversations. It’s not just letters — it’s the name of an important enzyme your body makes, and it can impact how your body processes key nutrients. The good news? There’s a simple test to find out if it affects you.

What is MTHFR?

MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, an enzyme that plays a key role in processing folate (vitamin B9) and homocysteine, an amino acid. This process supports DNA creation, neurotransmitters, and other essential functions.

MTHFR Variants

Some people are born with genetic changes (called MTHFR variants) that affect enzyme efficiency. The two most studied are C677T and A1298C. Most people with these variants never experience major issues, but in some cases they can influence folate and homocysteine levels.

Why It Matters

  • Most people with MTHFR variants have no noticeable health problems.
  • In some cases, it may slightly raise risks for blood clots, heart disease, or pregnancy complications.
  • Lifestyle, diet, and overall health usually play a bigger role than genetics alone.

How to Support Your Body

If your test shows you have an MTHFR variant, doctors may suggest adding methylated folate (the active form of folate), along with vitamins B12 and B6. These nutrients help balance homocysteine and keep your body running smoothly.

I found out that I have MTHFR and needed to take methylated vitamins. We currently offer various forms of methylated vitamins in our store so buy now or visit the store in person!

Knowledge is power. Understanding your MTHFR status can help you and your healthcare provider make better choices for your health.
