🌞 Saint John’s Wort: Sunshine in a Bottle (and on the Farm)

There’s something almost magical about the way St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) shows up on the land here at The Hippie Farmer. It arrives right around the summer solstice—when the days are at their longest—bursting with bright yellow flowers that feel like little drops of sunshine scattered across the farm.

But this herb offers so much more than just good looks. St. John’s Wort has a long and beautiful history as a plant ally for both the body and spirit, and we’re honored to grow and wildcraft it with care.

A Farm Favorite with Ancient Roots

St. John’s Wort has been used for centuries—its name comes from St. John the Baptist, with the plant traditionally blooming near his feast day in late June. Herbalists have turned to it for everything from minor wounds to mood support, and it’s one of those plants that seems to hold the light of summer long after the season has passed.

Here on the farm, it thrives in sunny, open spaces and along fence lines. Its golden petals are not only beautiful but incredibly potent when harvested at just the right time.

Tincture Benefits: Sunshine for the Soul

One of our favorite ways to use St. John’s Wort is as a tincture—a concentrated herbal extract that captures the energetic and medicinal properties of the plant.

Mood Support

Often used for mild to moderate depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), St. John’s Wort tincture helps balance mood and uplift the spirit—especially during the darker, colder months.

Nerve & Pain Support

It’s also commonly used to support the nervous system physically, particularly for neuralgia or nerve-related discomfort.

Growing with Gratitude

At The Hippie Farmer, we harvest our St. John’s Wort at peak bloom, when the flowers are rich with sun energy and bursting with the signature red oil that stains our fingertips. We process everything fresh on the same day—whether it's going into a tincture, oil infusion, or being dried for later use.

We’re proud to grow, harvest, and share this plant with care and intention—just as it was meant to be.

With love and goat kisses,
– The Hippie Farmer

Note: While St. John’s Wort is a powerful ally, it can interact with certain medications. We always recommend folks check in with a trusted herbalist or practitioner before using it regularly.
